Verbal Jint - The Good Die Young

Korean rapper / producer, Verbal Jint(VJ)'s new album will be released on October 26th. Although VJ claimed that he would never release another album again yet he filled his album with fifteen songs inspired by several deaths in 2009 including Michael Jackson, former Korean president Roh Moo Hyun and Kim Dae Joong. Delly boi, a beatmaker of his crew Overclass, took charge of producing beats for tracks.

I've already preordered The Good Die Young and to be honest, I can hardly wait for it to come since VJ has already proved his skills and musical talents with his previous album Imputation which won Korean Music Awards in 2008.

VJ released one of the tracks, Infernal Affairs, online to the public.

From the soundtrack of Japanese film All about Lily Chou-Chou. Here is the first track, Arabesque, which is also played at the very first beginning of movie in the beautiful rice-field scene. The lyric is written in Okinawan which is absolutely soothing and serene. I highly recommend you to watch the movie depicting morphed darkness of Japanese youth with internet-pop cult, ijime and enjo kosai. The film was directed by Shunji Iwai and available on Netflix.

Warmman's new digital single will be released on August 3rd. It contains three new tracks from his upcoming album Global Warming which will be released this September. From his crew, Overclass, Xepy and Delly Boi produced all tracks.

Verbal Jint confirmed the title of his upcoming work (single) in 2009 as The Good Die Young. He said several deaths of famous figures which happened this year made him to name his work as The Good Die Young. Delly Boi produced all beats used for this new single which is scheduled to be released this September.

Korean Hip Hop artist, JAZ released his new album, SEOULSUPERBAADASSSSS! He was inspired by Blaxploitation films and their soundtracks during the 70's and worked on this new album as creating a 'Blaxploitation flick'. With a deep understanding of black Americans' life in getto and multi-dimensional emotions and imagination, he tried to revive modern Blaxploitation music.

The result of his insightful attempt, his second single will be released on July 14th. The track list of the new single is now released on public. There are some familiar names on the list, including JA and The Quiett. You can also listen to one of the tracks, "NAA-BBUN-AUNG-DUNNG-E(means bad ass)" at his myspace.

Supreme Team's overground debut performance

Korean Hip Hop duo, Supreme Team made their mainstream debut on July 9th through M!Countdown. The performance was somewhat disappointing for me. I expected more lines with dope flow and rhymes of E-Sens and Simon D but the actual song sounded like another K-Pop tune. So far I haven't listened to their whole album so I cannot make further comment about their album yet their mainstream debut could not meet my anticipation.

Supreme Team's new album 'Supreme Team Guide To Excellent Adventure' will be released on upcoming 13th. They announced their track list online and here it is.

For this album, Dynamic Duo, Dok2, Beatbox DG, T and a number of Hip Hop artists put their names on the list. Also a famous composer, Bang Si Hyuk's name can be found on the list(as "Hitman" Bang), raising the expectation of listeners for the new album.

Kim Combie

Korean Hip Hop duo, Kim Combie recently announced that they disbanded. Its members, Kim Jot Ki and Kim Pok Ddal released diss tracks against each other.

In 2008, Kim Jot Ki and Kim Pok Ddal formed online community of outcasts in their high school called 'Hoppaclass'(parodying Korean Hip Hop crew Overclass). Later, Kim Jot Ki and Kim Pok Ddal left Hoppaclass as Kim Combie. They found label called 'BBK Saunds'. They use 'Voiceware', a computer program which converts text data into human voice, instead of their real voice. They gained fame among listeners and some even tried to imitate their Voiceware rap. At the same time, they had to face the harsh criticism questioning the sincerity of their music.

Personally, I enjoy their humourous lyrics (unfortunately it is almost impossible to translate them to English) which reflects Korean internet culture really well.

De De Mouse, Japanese electronic musician has recently caught my ears. He started performing in 2005 and released his first album, Tide of Stars in 2007. Since then he has expanded his musical scope and worked with other artists. He was in charge for music of Japanese designer, Suzuki Takayuki's 2008 s/s collection. In 2008, he released Sunset Girls which sounds like a combination of "solace" and "thrill" according to his official website.

Japanese underground Hip Hop group, 呪煙a.k.a JUGEM consists of three rappers, TAK THE CODONA, 894, DELMONTE. Their first album "Yattuke Colosseum" was released in April 15th this year. Even if you don't understand the language, the producing of tracks is elaborate and well done. I recommand the track called 捕助輪(Hojyorin).

Verbal Jint [Imputation]

: Since he released his debut EP in 2000, Verbal Jint(VJ) has built his reputation in Korean Hip Hop scene with his extraordinary talent. Yet his straightfoward lyrics were controversial and created lots of anti-VJ fans. Ironically, these opponents contributed VJ's best album in 2008. As to say, VJ saw the criticism of him as an 'imputation' and he used his anger, frustration and despair as an artistic inspiration and made an art piece, Imputation. It is organically constructed with constant narration and plot and based on analogue sound from live performance rather than strong hip hop sound. VJ sometimes spits out harsh criticism to 'rookies' of korean hip hop and sometimes he reveals his affection for hip hop in this album. He sounds convincing since his words are rational and at the same time emotional. Following his self-reflective lyrics, hip hop under the imputation is no longer a 'hip hop' but becoming a 'music'. With this album, VJ takes off imputation not only on himself but also on Korean hip hop.

: Super rookies have appeared with brilliant rap skills and lyrics in Korean hip hop scene, yet still they cannot compete with DynamicDuo(DD): the ability to catch the theme from daily life and transform it into clever rhyme. These brilliant two have proved that with Korean language they can rap rhythmically sonce they were part of CB Mass. They have made lyrics with various topics such as their faith in hip hop, social issues, our daily lives and love between man and woman. DD overcame a slump and made their fourth album [Last Days]. A track from this album 'Mother's Bean-paste soup' consists of DD's strength points. As a grownup, if you've ever had a hartime in your life, you could easily sympathize with this song. Additionally, Ra.D's minimalistic composition and sampling of food-cutting and soup-boiling sound add fun and completeness of the song. Especially, DD solved usual problem of Korean hip hop which is lack of simple and catchy chorus lines.

: Big Bang's arrival was sensational. (Big Bang is a Korean pop idol) People expected them as a 'Black music idol' since they called their music style as hip hop and R&B. Yet, with mega hit track 'Lies', their music has sounded less and less black and listeners started to miss their original black sound. Regarding this circumstances, TaeYang was the first one among Big Bang members to release solo albumt. He was thought to be musically and physically most close to black music and he fulfilled this view with his album filled with black music satisfying listeners. The strength of this album is that 'well-done re-appropriation of mainstream American R&B'. Some might question the value of reproduction. Yet if you realize that we cannot ignore western music, you would appreciate the re-appropriation based on sincere understanding of R&B not just copying. TaeYang proved his passion and effort for black music with this album.

: Not many people can question the winner of the Best R&B song, 'Look Only at Me'. Look Only at Me was a song targeted public and trend. Its popularity among public and critics results from overcoming the inferiority complex of Korean R&B and approaching to R&B as a pop.

Vocal Lee Ji Hyung was the finest pick since Toy viewed Hongdae as a pop scene not as an large-scale alternative scene. : W was used to be a band named Where The Story Ends somewhat long and with deep meaning. When this band suddenly changed their name to W, we could expect change of their music also. Their choice was mating with well refined pop style so as to more listeners would understand their music. They accomplish a success with this album Hardboiled. With new vocalist, Whale, they could attain characteristic vocal representing the band. Their sound can be called as an evolution of Korean pop based on electronic sound and house, new wave, modern rock and even R&B. Three songs at the beginning, 'Brother is Back', 'Stardust' and 'Morning Star' are the brightest moment of ths album

: Galaxy Express can be called as an energy which would crash limbs and burst your heart. They compiled that energy into their first album Noise On Fire. The rhythm of hard rock and metallic sound of heavy metal coexist while sound of 산울림SanUlim and 한대수Han Dae Soo is transformed into punk. Their live recording is not perfect yet that does not mean we can ignore the fact that this album was one of the most fanatic syndromes. Galaxy Express proved the charm which only can be attained by rock music.

Jang Gi Ha 'Cheap Coffee'

: It was difficult to decide the genre of Cheap Coffee. This song has both rock and pop elements yet, groove and method of this song made us to award this song as the best rock song. Self observation and humor rooted from 70-80's Korean rock are well shown in Cheap Coffee. The anxiety of modern youth is humorously narrated and the narration (or rap) between melodies is the most exellent part of this song. Jang Gi Ha provided one good example of controversial issue, "Korean style Rock" and proved the importance of narration which has been disappeard in Korean music scene.

This song also can be viewed as not only the ultimate completion of Sister's Barbershop-style modern rock but also the best tune of Korean modern rock.

Korean Music Awards 2008-2009 (part 1)

Korean Music Awards(KMA) was found in 2004. It is the most legitimate music award in Korea which can be compared with Mercury Prize in UK. Most music awards in Korea are hosted by mega broadcasting station such as KBS, MBC and SBS and they were representing interests of corporations, major record companies and entertainment management companies. This has been criticized by many artists and listeners and the need for fairer and more legitimate music award has been discussed. As a result, the first Korean Music Awards was held in March, 2004.

This year, it announced its 6th award winners and here they are. Words are from KMA website translated in English by me.

Its lyric was fresh attempt combining 'singing' and 'talking' and alteration of Korean folk was well executed.

He also introduce underground music through his radio program. Toy can be called as a bridge between mainstream and underground music scene and that is the reason why he is the artist of the year.

A Guide to Korean / Japanese Music

Dear Listeners, it's been a while after my last posting besides play lists. Sorry for being lazy. Since I came here, I've met lots of people complaining about their narrow scopes for Asian music scene. When you think about music in Korea or Japan, first thing popping up in your mind must be K-Pop or J-Pop. Unfortunately, it's a sad truth. That is why I started my show, Cactus Cube, to introduce some good stuff from Korea and Japan.

Another sad truth is that my show is on Wednesday 4-6 a.m. (Last quarter it was same time on Thursday) so there aren't many listeners. (I guess!)

So, I want to give you some guides to find out good stuff from Korea and Japan by yourself. (Well, the best way is to listen to my show!)

This is what I'm doing to prepare my show:

There ARE rock festivals in Korea and Japan, and surprisingly they are quite big!

In Korea:
- Pentaport Rock Festival
- Ssamzie Sound Festival
- Grand Mint Festival

Pentaport has been the biggest rock fest in Korea but this year the original company who was in charge of Pentaport started its own rock festival(Jisan Valley Rock Festival) so, it's future is somewhat uncertain.
If you want to check out most recent indie musicians in Korea, Ssamzie Sound Festival would be a good guide. It focuses on Korean indie musician while Pentaport Rock brings more popular musicians.
For mellow and acoustic Korean sound, check out Grand Mint Festival.

In Japan:

Unfortunately, these two are only rock festival I know in Japan. If you know other good rock festivals, please let me know!

2. Indie Label Companies
I have been in contact with several Korean indie label companies. I know little about Japanese labels, unfortunately...

- Ruby Salon
One of the hottest indie label in Korea. Artists such as Galaxy Express, Gukkasten, Black Skirts, Yellow Doggy, Pony, Lee Jang Hyuk are now under Ruby Salon. and maybe (it's not confirmed) Black Skirts and Galaxy Express will come to America late this year. (Probably NYC)

- Boonga Boonga Record

Its moto: "Survivally sound and sustainable DoReMi:SSSD"

Boonga Boonga Record got famous since one of its artists, Jang Ki Ha and the Faces became sensational figure in Korean music scene. Most of its artists including Jang Ki Ha, Youth Unemployment, Cheese Stereo, etc, are based on Korea's 80's folk music.

- Beatball Record
Beatball Record is a newly emerged indie label and now it's expanding its business. Amateur Amplifier questioned the identity of Beatball in his blog(Should Beatball record be regarded as an indie label?) yet they have released indie albums with high quality.

Hope this helps you to explore more about Korean and Japanese underground.

How was your weekend? Hope all of you enjoy long, 4-days-weekend. Hail to Martin Luther King Jr!!! I went to the Leo Carrillo Beach with several friends. It was a trip. Phew. I've been through many emotional prisms so deeply and it's kinda tiresome. It's not a new thing but still it's always unfamiliar to me. I cannot handle it properly. Music, Literature, Art and cigarettes have been always good companion for me and here is another lyric by Cocore, one of the pioneers of Korean Indie music.
